Korean exchange gold is at its lowest since July, and this time trading is falling with it
KRX gold peaked at 208,300 won a gram on 25 August and closed at 175,250 on 21 October, down 15.9%. In August's slide, trading rose. This time daily volume dropped by a third, from 246kg to 162kg.

Gold on the Korea Exchange closed at 175,250 won a gram on 21 October, the lowest close in the 75 trading days we hold since 1 July. It peaked at 208,300 won on 25 August. From that peak the price is down 15.9%.
A falling gold price on the KRX is not new. In August we wrote that Korean gold had fallen 31% from January while trading in it went up, not down. This time the volume is falling too.
Price and volume, month by month
| Month (2026) | First close | Last close | Average daily volume |
|---|---|---|---|
| July | 197,190 | 187,460 | 219kg |
| August | 186,430 | 196,480 | 246kg |
| September | 196,280 | 182,940 | 197kg |
| October (to 21st) | 183,480 | 175,250 | 162kg |
August was the busiest month of the four: the price rose into the 25 August peak and the exchange traded an average of 246kg a day. Since then both lines have gone down together. October’s average, 162kg a day, is a third below August’s. The value traded in the first three weeks of October, 378 billion won, is less than half of September’s full-month total.
The big days came in late summer
The five largest one-day moves in the window were all in July, August and September. The biggest fall was −3.22% on 31 August, a week after the peak, and the biggest rise was +3.09% on 20 August. October has had none of that size: the price has slid without a single large day.
What this does not say
This is the Korean exchange’s own won price. It moves with the dollar price of gold and with the won–dollar exchange rate, and we have not split the fall between the two. Part of the drop in volume may also be calendar: the Chuseok holiday fell inside this window and shortens trading. The count does not say where gold goes next.
What it does show is a change in behaviour. In the earlier decline, Korean buyers traded more as prices fell. Since late August they have been trading less.

- Excluded figures
- International gold prices and the won–dollar rate. This piece uses only the Korean exchange's own won price; we did not decompose the fall into a dollar-gold move and a currency move.
- Why trading fell. Holiday weeks (Chuseok fell in this window) shorten activity; we did not adjust for them.
- The mini-gold (100g) contract, which tracks the same price and is reported separately.
