4 negative quarters since 2021 — and not one of them was followed by another
Korean real GDP, quarter on quarter and seasonally adjusted, read straight from the Bank of Korea's own database. No forecast, and no view on what the Bank or the government should do next.
The finding
Of the 22 quarters since the start of 2021, 4 were negative — Q4 2022 (-0.40%), Q2 2024 (-0.20%), Q1 2025 (-0.20%), Q4 2025 (-0.10%). None of them was followed by a second fall.
The only back-to-back decline in the whole series is Q1 2020 and Q2 2020, when the pandemic closed the quarter. On the common two-consecutive-quarters convention, that is the last time Korea met the test.
What the series does instead is alternate. The sign flipped 8 times in 21 steps since 2021. A quarter of contraction here has been a pause, not a trend — at least so far, and that is a description of what happened, not a prediction of what comes next.
Why "technical recession" is a convention, not a verdict
Two consecutive quarters of falling GDP is a rule of thumb, widely used because it is easy to check. It is not how Korea's statistical agency dates a downturn, and it takes no account of how deep the falls are or what employment did. We count it here because readers look for it — not because it settles anything.
Quarter on quarter and year on year are different numbers and often point different ways. Every figure on this page is quarter on quarter, seasonally adjusted.

The ordinary quarter
Leaving 2020 out, the average quarter since 2021 grew 0.64% — about 2.57% a year if a quarter like that repeated four times.
2020 is in the table above but out of this average, and we would rather say so than quietly drop it. A −2.6% quarter pulls a mean that is meant to describe ordinary quarters. The annual figure is compounded, not the quarterly average multiplied by four.
The strongest quarter on record here is Q3 2020 at +2.30%; the weakest is Q2 2020 at -2.60%. The most recent reading is Q2 2026, +0.60%.
What we could not measure
- Why any quarter moved. This is the published growth rate and nothing else. Attributing it to exports, construction or policy would be a story we have not measured.
- Revisions. National accounts are revised. We print what the series says on the day we pulled it, and the pull date is below.
- Anything about the next quarter. The alternating pattern is a description of 2021 to now. It is not a rule, and we do not treat it as one.
