Hyundai Rotem, the maker of the K2 tank and Korean high-speed trains, was one of the most-written-about stocks in Korean broker research this month. It drew eight reports in the two weeks to 21 October, five of them on a single day, 20 October, when brokers reviewed its third quarter.

Every report, in order

Date Broker Prior target (won) New target (won) Change Rating
7 Oct Yuanta 300,000 150,000 −50% Buy
15 Oct Daishin 280,000 200,000 −29% Buy
20 Oct Yuanta 150,000 150,000 0% Buy
20 Oct SK — 180,000 Buy
20 Oct iM — 190,000 Buy
20 Oct Sangsangin — 170,000 Buy
20 Oct Daishin 200,000 160,000 −20% Buy
21 Oct LS 330,000 155,000 −53% Buy

Daishin cut twice inside a week, from 280,000 to 200,000 and then to 160,000. Two brokers took their targets to about half of where they had been.

Where the targets landed

Before October, the prior targets listed ran from 280,000 to 330,000 won. The eight October targets run from 150,000 to 200,000 won. The highest new target is below the lowest old one.

What the headlines said

The report titles on 20 October read like a debate. iM’s was headed “낙폭 과대 구간”, a zone where the fall has been overdone. Daishin’s was “신규 수주가 필요한 상황”, it needs new orders. Sangsangin’s was “신규 수주를 고대하며”, waiting for new orders. LS, the next day, wrote that it was time to weigh “expectation over worry”.

None of the eight changed the rating. As in our wider count of a month of Korean research, the Buy stays and the target price carries the opinion (analysts cut more targets than they raised in October).
