SK hynix reports third-quarter results on Wednesday, 28 October. The FnGuide consensus, as reported by Financial News on 18 October, is 76.96 trillion won of operating profit on 98.23 trillion of revenue. Three months earlier the same consensus stood at 81.51 trillion. It came down 5.6%, and Financial News put that down to the won’s strength cutting the won value of dollar sales.

We looked at a different number: how much of the Korean market SK hynix now is, by value and by trading.

Value: down to a fifth

Date SK hynix close (won) Share of KOSPI market value
30 Sep 1,776,000 23.01%
20 Oct 1,223,000 19.49%
23 Oct 1,277,000 20.36%

SK hynix fell 28.1% from 30 September to 23 October. KOSPI’s total market value fell 18.7%. So its share of the market shrank by 2.65 points. On Monday it closed at 1,275,000 won, little changed.

Trading: still a quarter

Over the 15 KOSPI sessions from 1 to 23 October, 309.3 trillion won of shares changed hands on the Korea Exchange. 77.4 trillion of it, 25.0%, was SK hynix. Samsung Electronics, common and preferred together, was 74.0 trillion, or 23.9%. Samsung is the larger company by half again; SK hynix traded more.

Share of KOSPI value (23 Oct) Share of KOSPI trading (1–23 Oct)
SK hynix 20.36% 25.0%
Samsung Electronics (common + preferred) 30.43% 23.9%

SK hynix’s daily share of trading ran from 21.9% on 1 October to 29.6% on 21 October, the day KOSPI rebounded. It out-traded Samsung on 10 of the 15 sessions.

A stock that is a fifth of the market’s value and a quarter of its turnover is where the market’s argument is happening. Wednesday’s numbers land on that.

This counts value and trading, not what the results will be. Statistics, not advice.
