Samsung Electronics publishes its full third-quarter results on Thursday, 29 October. On 8 October it gave preliminary figures: about 195 trillion won of revenue and 107.4 trillion won of operating profit. Hankook Ilbo reported that the profit figure was above the 105.4 trillion market estimate.
Samsung has two listed share lines, and in October they did not fall together.
Two lines, two falls
| 30 Sep (won) | 23 Oct (won) | Change | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Common (005930) | 268,500 | 215,500 | −19.7% |
| Preferred (005935) | 195,200 | 167,900 | −14.0% |
The preferred carries no vote. It usually trades at a discount to the common. In October the discount shrank.
The ratio, session by session
We divided the preferred’s close by the common’s on each of the 38 sessions in our record, which starts on 27 August.
| Date | Preferred ÷ common |
|---|---|
| 31 Aug (lowest) | 0.717 |
| 30 Sep | 0.727 |
| 15 Oct | 0.758 |
| 19 Oct | 0.784 |
| 20 Oct | 0.784 |
| 23 Oct | 0.779 |
The monthly average went from 0.725 in late August to 0.749 in September and 0.757 in October. The two highest readings in our record came on 19 and 20 October, in the middle of the market’s slide. On Monday the order flipped for a day: the common fell 1.16% and the preferred 2.20%, according to Newspim.
Why it matters for the weighing
Counted as one company, Samsung Electronics was 30.43% of KOSPI’s market value on 23 October: 27.49 points from the common and 2.94 from the preferred. The preferred line alone is larger than every other KOSPI company except SK hynix, a point we first counted in August. A narrower discount means a slightly larger share of the market rides on Samsung than the common shares alone suggest (the full earnings-week weighing).
The ratio is a fact about two prices. Whether the gap should be wider or narrower is a judgement, and not ours to make.
Statistics, not advice. This is not a view on Samsung’s results.
