For most of October, the order had been the other way: KOSDAQ held up better. Here is what our daily KRX files show up to Friday.

The whole market versus one company

On Friday, 23 October, the 1,824 KOSDAQ listings were worth 425.8 trillion won together. SK hynix, one KOSPI company, was worth 932.8 trillion: 2.19 times the entire KOSDAQ (SK hynix’s place in the KOSPI).

KOSDAQ’s ten biggest names are 17.5% of its value. The largest, Alteogen, was 15.6 trillion won, less than SK hynix’s daily swing on some October days.

From 30 September to 23 October, KOSDAQ’s market value fell 11.6% and KOSPI’s 18.7%. KOSDAQ’s slice of the combined market grew.

Trading went the other way. In the first days of October, more than a third of all won traded on the two boards went through KOSDAQ. By mid-October the share had dropped to 19.7% (15 October). That was the day SK hynix fell 11.06% and Samsung Electronics 9.48%, and KOSPI trading reached 28.64 trillion won, its October high in our files. It was 25.1% on Friday.

Breadth was weak even before Monday. On 23 October, 1,248 KOSDAQ listings fell and 404 rose.
