A 20-second visual of this story — silent. Not investment advice.

The KOSPI closed Monday, 26 October, at 5,469.47, down 1.46% and its lowest close since 6 April, according to Newspim. Foreign investors sold a net 753.1 billion won of KOSPI shares on the day. The market goes into the busiest week of the earnings season at that level.

How much of the market actually reports this week? We took the 28 companies on The Asia Business Daily’s earnings calendar and weighed each by its share of KOSPI’s total market value at Friday’s close, the same measure as our KOSPI market-value share page.

By day

Day Companies Share of KOSPI market value
Mon 26 Oct 3 0.52%
Tue 27 Oct 7 2.00%
Wed 28 Oct (SK hynix) 7 23.97%
Thu 29 Oct (Samsung Electronics) 7 34.29%
Fri 30 Oct 4 2.01%
Total 28 62.80%

KOSPI’s 940 listings were worth 4,582.2 trillion won on 23 October. The 28 reporters account for 2,877.6 trillion of it.

Two companies, half the market

Strip out SK hynix (20.36%) and Samsung Electronics (30.43%, of which 2.94 points are its preferred shares) and the remaining 26 companies are 12.01% of the market. That includes Kia, Hyundai Mobis, Samsung Electro-Mechanics, Hanwha Aerospace and seven financial groups.

The seven financial groups (IBK, BNK, JB, iM, Shinhan, Samsung Card and KB) are 2.78% together. Every Monday and Friday reporter combined is 2.53%.

So the week has two shapes. By number of companies, it is spread evenly from Tuesday to Thursday. By market value, 58.3% of the entire KOSPI reports on Wednesday and Thursday alone.

Why the number matters this week

A market-value share is not a forecast. It says how much of the index level is mechanically tied to a result. On Friday, KOSPI rose 0.30% while 719 of its listings fell and 173 rose in our data (the breadth count). A market this concentrated can move one way while most of its stocks move the other.

We weighed the two chip makers separately: SK hynix’s share of trading has run ahead of its share of value, and Samsung’s preferred shares fell less than the common in October.

This is a count of market value, not a view on any company. Statistics, not advice.
